Welcome to Kaprun

Kaprun lies at the foot of the High Tauern in the area of ​​the Glockner group. Parts of the municipality of Kaprun are located in Hohe Tauern National Park. With the big one Wiesbachhorn (3564 meters) is the summit of the seventh highest independent peak in Austria and the third highest peak of the Glockner Group in the municipality of Kaprun.

Kaprun through the ages

Kaprun was first mentioned in a document in 931 with the Celtic name Chataprunnin (wild water) in the Codex Odalberti. The place was a mountain farming village for centuries. In 1166 the Kaprun possessions became the Lords of Falkenstein-Neuburg im Codex Falkensteinensis mentioned. Kaprun Castle was built in the 12th century and was stormed and burned down by farmers in 1526. Immediately afterwards, it was rebuilt in its current form; extensive renovation work has taken place gradually since 1984.

Kitzsteinhorn glacier: Kaprun is famous for the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, which allows skiing and snowboarding all year round. The glacier cable car takes visitors to breathtaking heights with fantastic views of the surrounding glacier landscape.

Kaprun Castle

The Kaprun Castle sits enthroned on a small hill above the town of Kaprun. Today the 12th century building is an extraordinary event location and is home to various cultural events.

The Sigmund Thun Gorge

Very close to Kaprun Castle you can feel the power of nature up close: on a hike through the Sigmund Thun Gorge you come very close to the roaring water masses of the Kapruner Ache. Lumberjacks used to work here and left many traces, today you walk on wooden walkways through the gorge and marvel at the power of the water that has created this wonderful world over millions of years.
