THE HIGH MOUNTAIN RESERVOIRS OF KAPRUN

The Mooserboden and Wasserfallboden reservoirs are gently nestled between snow-capped mountains and glaciers, right on the border with the Hohe Tauern National Park. A myth was created in the Kaprun Valley in the post-war period, which you can still experience today when you visit the Kaprun high mountain reservoirs.

Adventure Kaprun high mountain reservoirs

The Kaprun high mountain reservoirs are a series of reservoirs that were created as part of the Kaprun Tauern power plant in the Zell am See-Kaprun region in Austria. These reservoirs are located in the high alpine regions and are used to generate energy through hydropower. Here is some important information about the Kaprun high mountain reservoirs:

Reservoirs: The main reservoirs are the Mooserboden and the Wasserfallboden. They act as storage basins for the Kaprun Tauern power plant and store the water needed to generate energy.

Location and accessibility: The reservoirs are located high in the Austrian Alps and can be reached via a toll road from Kaprun. There is also a cable car that transports visitors from the valley station to Mooserboden.

It is advisable to check opening times, access routes and possible guided tours in advance, as these may vary depending on the season and weather conditions.

Of course, there are also celebrations on the shores of Lake Zell in summer: During the “Zeller Seezauber”, a fascinating light and laser show, colorfully illuminated water fountains dance over the lake to changing music on three evenings a week from May 14th to October 15th – a magical spectacle for the eyes and ears. Admission is free. In addition to the evening shows, daytime shows with music and water will take place every day from May 14th between 13:00 p.m. and 18:00 p.m. (on the hour).

31 meters altitude, 8,2 meters track width - these are just the bare numbers. Europe's largest open inclined elevator and the largest rail vehicle in the world take you to an incomparable Alpine landscape.

During the construction of the Kaprun high mountain reservoirs, the Lärchwand inclined elevator was the only way to bring heavy equipment, building materials and trucks into the high mountains. After the dams were completed, it was a tourist highlight in Salzburger Land and has since been part of the means of transport for guests to the Kaprun high mountain reservoirs.

The Lärchwand inclined elevator combines two superlatives (the largest open inclined elevator in Europe and the largest track width of a passenger-carrying rail vehicle in the world).
There is space for up to 185 people on the completely renovated inclined elevator, which still retains its charm. VERBUND therefore offers an additional tourist highlight at the Kaprun high mountain reservoirs that reflects the mixture of nature and technology. The Lärchwand inclined elevator leads above the Kesselfall-Alpenhaus to the Wasserfallboden reservoir. The inclined elevator climbs 431 meters in altitude over a length of 820 meters. Every year over 100.000 guests visit the Kaprun high mountain reservoirs.
